Wheelchair Funding in Alberta
A wheelchair has to fit the person, the home, the caregiver situation, and the way it will be used every day. Getting this right the first time saves a lot of frustration later.
What type of wheelchair might be needed?
Some people need a basic manual wheelchair for short outings. Others need a lightweight chair, reclining chair, tilt chair, bariatric chair, custom seating, or power mobility. The right choice depends on posture, strength, transfers, pressure risk, transportation, and daily use.
What should you check before choosing a wheelchair?
- Seat width and depth
- Weight capacity
- Chair weight
- Armrest style
- Footrest or elevating leg-rest needs
- Cushion requirements
- Transport and storage
- Indoor vs outdoor use
FAQ
Can I choose any wheelchair?
Not always. Funded wheelchairs must follow AADL program rules and your assessed medical need. There is still room to compare models and accessories, so ask which options fit your authorization and which features would be private-pay.
Should I buy a wheelchair before approval?
No. Get assessed and authorized first, because AADL does not normally refund private purchases made before approval. If you need a chair right away, ask about a short-term rental while your funding is reviewed.
