The bathroom is the most dangerous room in most homes for older adults. Hard surfaces, water, low seats, and nothing safe to hold onto are a difficult combination. The encouraging part is that you do not need a full renovation to make it much safer.
Why the bathroom is the highest-risk room
Falls tend to happen at the moments of transfer: lowering onto a low toilet, stepping over a tub wall, or standing up from a wet surface. Many people instinctively grab a towel bar or soap dish — neither of which is built to hold body weight. That single habit causes a lot of injuries.
Practical changes that help
- Grab bars mounted into studs or with proper anchors — never a towel bar as a substitute.
- A raised toilet seat or toilet safety frame to make sitting and standing easier.
- A bath bench or transfer bench so bathing can be done seated instead of standing.
- A non-slip mat inside and outside the tub or shower.
- A handheld shower head for washing while seated.
The mistake many people make
The biggest mistake is guessing on sizing and stability. A bath bench that is too narrow, a toilet seat that is too high, or a grab bar in the wrong spot can create a new hazard instead of removing one. It is worth measuring the space and, ideally, getting a quick assessment before you buy.
Will any of this be funded?
AADL may cover some bathing and toileting aids when they are medically necessary and approved. The rules vary by item, so check our guide to bathroom safety equipment funding in Alberta before you purchase.
