Compression Stockings: How to Get the Right Fit

Compression Stockings: How to Get the Right Fit

Short version: Compression stockings only work if they fit. The right size and compression level make them comfortable and effective — the wrong ones end up in a drawer. Proper measurement is the most important step.

Compression stockings are simple in theory and easy to get wrong in practice. Most of the complaints we hear — they are too tight, they roll down, they are impossible to put on — come back to fit, not the product itself.

What compression level do you need?

Compression is measured in mmHg, and higher is not automatically better. Lighter levels can support tired, achy legs and travel swelling. Higher, medical-grade levels are used for specific conditions and should follow the advice of your healthcare provider. Do not self-prescribe a strong compression level — it can do more harm than good.

Why measurement matters

Compression garments are sized from actual leg measurements, not your shoe size or dress size. Legs are best measured in the morning before swelling builds up, at specific points along the ankle, calf, and thigh. A few centimetres in the wrong place is the difference between a stocking that helps and one you never wear.

Choosing a style

  • Knee-high — the most common and easiest to manage.
  • Thigh-high — for swelling that extends above the knee.
  • Pantyhose style — for full-leg support.
  • Open or closed toe — a comfort preference, with open toe useful for larger feet or toe sensitivity.

Caring for them and when to replace

Wash compression garments regularly and follow the care instructions, since the fibres are what hold the compression. Most ready-made stockings gradually lose their effectiveness over a few months of regular wear, so plan to replace them rather than stretching them for years.

Is the cost covered?

Compression stockings may be covered through AADL or private benefits when criteria are met, often with documentation. See our guide to compression stocking funding in Alberta and Blue Cross coverage for details.
